On 26th January, 2001,
a massive earthquake hit the western Indian state of Gujarat
claiming between 20,000 and 30,000 lives. Many areas in Kutch,
Bhavnagar, Surendranagar, Rajkot and Ahmedabad districts were
reduced to rubble.
"Voices from a Disaster"
is about the plight of the survivors in Gujarat after the
earthquake. The film was shot mainly during the visit and
public hearings conducted by the Indian People' Tribunal's
in the earthquake-affected areas. It captures the enduring
misery of the survivors, who, eight months after the earthquake
devastated their lives, are now faced with offical apathy
and callousness towards their plight. The film captures the
complete lack of disaster-preparedness on the part of the
government, and the sorrow and well as perseverance of survivors
under conditions of acute stress.
